24th November, 2011

Dear Friends

News up-date and invitations

As we enter the centenary of the birth of eurythmy, what has been happening lately and what is the outlook? This term we welcome Karla Prates who joins Maren and Shaina to teach eurythmy to the new first-year students. Karla, originally from Brazil, brings her rich experience with eurythmy in education. Besides teaching and eurythmy-therapy work Shaina has visited St Petersberg and Boulder, U.S.A., as mentor to the eurythmy trainings there.

At the end of the summer our Eurythmy Studio was transformed by a new roof! A complete redecoration by the Young Stage Group brightened it up still further. At last building work begins to renovate the lower Glasshouse into a new theatre (350 seats), whereby we also gain a new studio. The opening is scheduled for July 2012.

Our end of term takes place with showing of work on Friday, 9th December at 2.00 pm in the Eurythmy Studio, since the Theatre is closed for re-building. Limited seating!

“Moving Tales” continues performing “The Tale of Harap Alb”, Romania’s most well-known story. This term, this action-packed story delighted children in Rudolf Steiner House, London; Wynstones School, Gloucester; Michael House School, near Nottingham; and Pennine Camphill Community, Wakefield.

The new post-graduate Stage Group are working on a programme for outreach, “Contrasts”. Their first appearance will be with the delicious story from Haiti “Monkey and Papa-God” on Saturday 17th Dec., 11.00 am & 2.00 pm in the Eurythmy Studio. Take a break from the Christmas rush; join the young of all ages visiting the new Ruskin Glass Centre!

Further outreach work is building up. “Water Islands”, Maren’s solo eurythmy programme with Geoffrey Norris (speech and acting) and Alan (piano), over half-term has toured S. Germany and Ireland, with performances in the Eurythmeum, Stuttgart, and the old stamping ground in Nuremberg. In Ireland they performed to three Camphill Communities: Ballytobin, Glencraig and Mourne Grange. Very warm appreciation has encouraged a plan to tour N. Germany and further venues nearer home. After fifteen performances, this programme has matured and will continue to tour over the next few years.

In July the Stotts performed in “touching the light” at the Goetheanum, a farewell performance for the renowned lighting technician Peter Jackson by various eurythmy groups and individual eurythmists. Maren performed, by request, Peter’s “Four Haikus” with Schönberg’s “Six Little Piano Pieces”. “A special gift” said one eurythmist-reviewer (Auftakt); “most presentable, transparent, versatile, ripe and moving” claimed another (Eurythmy Association Newsletter).

More than one composer has been commissioned to write for eurythmy. Last April several pieces were performed in eurythmy at Alanus Hochschule, near Bonn, during the “8th Composers’ Symposium”, a day devoted to Nigel Osborne (Reid Professor, Edinburgh University). The eurythmy students of Alanus performed a piano-piece written for them. Maren performed with Robert Davey (cello) “Gramsci”, written for her, and “Metamorphoses” with Virginia Shaw (oboe d’amore) of the Halle Orchestra (Manchester). These artists with Alan will perform in a concert in Edinburgh marking Nigel’s retirement (2012). They will also perform again in the Canadian Cambridge Music Conference organised by Elizabeth Carmack in Vancouver, November 2012. “Harap Alb”, “Contrasts” and “Water Islands” will be performed during the centenary celebrations organised by the Association of Eurythmists in the UK for July, 2012, possibly in the new hall in Camphill, Newton Dee, Aberdeen (venue soon to be confirmed).

Unexpected changes in UK-government legislation have forced us to re-apply for an inspection by UKBA in order to gain “highly trusted sponsorship” status necessary to receive non-EU student applicants. We are doing all we can to overcome this setback; re-inspection will take place early in the new year.

With warmest Christmas greetings,

Alan Stott

(Secretary WMEA)

for the directors, teachers and students

Dear Friends,

The builders take down the scaffolding, having completed the new roof to our Studio. And the new changing room next next to our office is a new asset.

The new term begins 12 September with a new 1st-year intake, commencing the newly accredited BA course. Alongside Shaina Stoehr and Maren Stott, we welcome a new eurythmy teacher Karla Prates, who adds her rich experience in eurythmy education.

We also welcome 5 newly graduated eurythmists who start a new performing project “Contrasts – Eurythmy 2011″. They develop their performing skills, collaborating with cellist Robert Davey, pianist Alan Stott, actor/speech artist Geoffrey Norris, and with input from the Mask Studio and dramatic direction from Mike Chase, artistic director Maren Stott. 20 performances from May – July are planned throughout England in order to promote professional performance in the arts of Eurythmy, Music and Speech to wider audiences. Workshops, introductions and post-performance discussions are part of the package (look out for up-coming performances in your area!).

“Water Islands” and “Harap Alb” continue to tour:

HARAP ALB:

23 September 2011: Michael House School, Heanor nr. Nottingham. School performance a.m.

23 September 2011: Peninne Community, Wakefield. p.m. Public performance (Lynda Abrahams 01924-241306)

WATER ISLANDS

14 October 2011: R. Steiner School, Kings Langley, Herts. School performance a.m.

14 October 2011, 7.30: Camphill Community, Delrow (Roxanne Leonard: 01923-851703).

HARAP ALB

26 Nov. 2011, 2 pm. Rudolf Steiner House, 35 Park Road, London NW6 (near Baker Street tube)

Eurythmy Centenary Year

These programmes continue for the Eurythmy Festival 2012, to celebrate 100 years since the birth of eurythmy. Eurythmists throughout the country are working towards a big public Festival on eurythmy, performances, workshops and information: 17 – 22 July, venue soon to be announced.

At home, we are looking forward to even closer collaboration with The Glasshouse College and Arts Centre with the re-opening of the refurbished Theatre in July 2012.

We are working hard to fulfil the sudden new legislation regarding immigration requirements for non-EU students. It has meant that a number of potential students and performers are delayed a year. A financial appeal will soon be launched to enable us to realise our plans to develop a vibrant eurythmy centre in the heart of England. Thank you all for your warm support!

With all best wishes,

Maren Stott
